Adjectives are used in English to describe nouns and pronouns as in Arabic as an example :
✔ This rabbit is very fast .
✔ My friend's house is beautiful .
✔ Sandy's dress is very unique .
But we need to know that the adjectives in English are divided in to Two types:
1-First kind ( Base adjectives )
And the adjectives can be used with ( very ) to emphasize the meaning and exaggeration, Among these adjectives :
Good – Bad – Angry – Fast
Second kind ( Strong adjectives )
And these adjectives give an exaggeration formula to the sentence and don't need ( very ) with it, Among these adjectives :
Fantastic – Gorgeous –Hideous
We have initially identified the types of adjectives and in the following table we will review a large part of base adjectives and its synonymous with strong adjectives and we're going to give a few examples of it .
Strong adjective |
Base adjective |
Filthy | Dirty |
Terrible | Bad |
Furious | Angry |
Exhausted |
Tired |
Astonished |
Surprised |
Enormous |
Big |
Tiny |
Small |
Obese |
Fat |
Freezing |
Cold |
Boiling |
Hot |
And in this table we've go to know a bunch of base adjectives and a bunch of strong adjectives and we have to know that the strong adjectives equal in meaning with base adjectives + very plus we'll show this more in the following examples :
✔ Your son is very hot → Your son is boiling
✔ Sandy is very beautiful →Sandy is gorgeous
✔ My best friends were very fat → My best friends were obese
✔ My mom was very tired → My mom was exhausted
✔ The movie was very bad → The movie was terrible
We finished the first part of our lesson today and explained the types of adjectives and we put together examples for each kind, Now we're going to move on the second part of lesson which is :
Words used to clarify the strength or weakness of the adjectives : ( Intensifier)
As
mentioned before that, The basic adjectives can come with ( very ) to
strengthen the meaning but actually there are other words as ( very )
control weakness or strength of the adjective. We will recognize them
and the extent of their influence both by force or weakness in order.
1-So – very – extremely –incredibly – exceptionally
( These words are equal in their effect on the adjective and give the strongest formulation )
✔ My sister is very hungry = My sister is so hungry
2-Really ( less strong )
✔ My sister is really hungry
3-Pretty ( less strong )
✔ My sister is pretty hungry
4-Fairly ( More formal and hardly meaningful )
✔ My sister is fairly hungry
So
we've explained how to strengthen or weaken basic adjectives using
several words but we should also mentioned the words that can come with
strong adjectives :
• Absolutely
For example :
✔ Your dress is absolutely fantastic .
✔ Really ( used with basic adjectives and also strong adjectives )
For example :
✔ Her poem is really terrible .
And
that's why we finished our lesson today, Where we learned about all the
adjectives in English both is type or how to strengthen or weaken by
many words .
