One of the most important lessons we will learn in English that is problematic for many people is Comparative and Superlative formula . Many of us confuse it and don't know the difference between them, but in this article we will explain each formula and the difference between them .

First : Comparative formula 

What is the comparative formula ?

It used when we compare Two things that have the same qualities as comparison . The way of formulating a comparative formula by the numbers of passages of the adjective and we will understand more than illustrative examples.

Multi syllables finished with ( Y ) Dual syllables finished with ( Y ) Monosyllabic
When converting the multi syllables finished with ( Y ) as ( beautiful )
In the comparative formula we are adding award ( more ) before adjective 
For example :
-Your dress is more expensive than mine .
-Ahmed's car is more beautiful than his car .
When put dual syllables adjective finished with ( Y ) as ( Happy ) in comparative formula we turn ( Y ) in to ( i ) before adding ( er ) .
For example :
-Salma is prettier than her sister
When converting the monosyllabic adjective as
( Short – tall ) to comparative formula we add to it ( er )
For example :
I'm shorter than Hana.-
-Her house is cheaper than mine.
-My dad is taller than my mom.
But we have to double the last letter in the adjective if the letter preceding it is vowel .
For example :
-The elephant is bigger than the monkey .

Whenever it is explained  only for regular adjectives but there are irregular adjectives whose shape changes completely when put in the comparative formula .

For example :

✔ Good → better 

✔ Bad →Worse 

-Your project is worse than others .

Second : Superlative formula :

We can say that the superlative formula is the grammatical version of the English language to prefer something about the rest of things .

How to configure the superlative formula ?

The comparative and the superlative formula share this point, the way the superlative formula is configured may also vary depending on the number of adjectives segments . And we'll show this more in the next table .

Multi syllables Monosyllabic
When we put multi syllables adjectives as
( expensive ) in the superlative formula we add the word ( the most ) before the adjective as in the following example :
-This car is the most beautiful .
-Your pen is the most expensive .
When we turn the monosyllabic adjective as ( tall – fast ) to the superlative formula, we add ( est ) to the adjective .
For example :
-Sandy is the fastest in the football team .
-I'm the longest in my sisters .
It should be noted that if the adjective ends with ( Y ) turn in to ( I )
For example :
Easy → easiest
 

You also need to learn about the forms of irregular verbs in the superlative formula as we know it in the comparative formula .

✔ Good → the best

✔ bad → the worst 

For example :

-My son is the worst of his colleagues .
