Verb to be - English grammar

This lesson is the most important English lesson because it is one of the basics of English to use a lot both in writing or speaking so we have to explain all his details and conditions in different cases .

First of all, we need to know that ( verb to be ) can come in ( present tense ) to take about names, nationalities , ages, feelings and marital status and also it can come in ( past tense ) to express about feeling or events in the past . In both cases the ( verb to be ) has different shape.

In this lesson we'll recognize it both in affirmation or negative with submit several examples .

Verb to be in present ( Affirmation )

Am Is Are
I He – She - it We – They - You
I am smart in
mathematics

I am very sad

I am 30 years old

I am grateful to my friends

I am Egyptian
She is very lucky in her work

It is a dangerous animal

He is very kind with his
children

Salma is very clever and
intelligent

We are so beautiful when
we love ourselves

They are tough on me in
this situation

You are very friendly

I and my friends are
cooperative when
working on the project

Negative :

When we want to put ( verb to be ) in negative form, We have to add ( Not ) after The verb for example :

✔ My uncles and I are not always in touch

✔ He is not bad as what she says

✔ I am currently not married 

Verb to be in past ( Affirmation )   

Was Were
I- He – She – it They – You - We
He was very weak

The skirt was very beautiful

I was scared when I saw the cat

The singer was awesome when she
took the

It was very cute

When I was young I was playing tennis

They were worried about their son

You were a coward when you were young

We were friends at elementary school

I and my sister were desperate for
my father and my mother

You were a mistake with your wife

They were married in the past

Negative :

As is the case in ( present ), We can put the ( verb to be ) in negative form through adding ( not ) after ( Was – Were ) and this will be more evident in the following examples :

✔ They were not honest with me from The beginning 

✔ I was not happy at the first school day

Important note :

There are several shortcuts that need identified and can be used when adding the ( Verb to be ) to the sentence :

You are – You're I am – I'm He is – He's      

It is not – it isn't We are – We aren't    

Question using the ( verb to be )

We can also using verb to be for question but in this case the answer always with ( Yes – No ) for examples :

✔ Are you American ?

Yes, I am American

✔ Is he a famous ?

Yes, he is 

✔ Were the boys at the class ?

Yes, they were

✔ Are you a doctor ?

No, I'm teacher
